NOTE: Currently the clay body database is under construction.
about the database
The clay and glaze database is an ongoing personal research project that combines my fascination with ceramic surfaces and my pursuit of Byzantine record keeping and organization. The goal of the project is to build a central repository of clay and glaze information that can be easily accessed.
I began developing this database while in graduate school; I've learned more about ceramic chemistry and web frameworks in the process. Since then I've been iterating and working to improve it.
about the author
My name is Ben Fiess. I enjoy ceramic surfaces and color–really. Most of my time is spent working in my studio, and when I have time, testing and recording new clay bodies and glazes. My education is in studio ceramics: Indiana University (MFA) and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (BFA). The past few years I've moved around a lot (currently Philadelphia) but consider the Midwest to be home.
